Employee Appreciation Day 2008

June 19th, 2008

We just had our 1st Annual Employee Appreciation Day here at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. The date was set for June 13th (yes, Friday the 13th), and a committee of 6 was chosen to put the day together. I was one of the six. I’ll just say that planning an event like this with 5 other opinions, attitudes and agendas was not easy. I wanted to quit after the first meeting. But, I made the commitment so I stuck it out.

The day went off without a hitch. It was great! The weather was beautiful and everyone was overdue for a day of fun in the sun.

Starting the Day

The day started with a light breakfast followed by the Scavenger Hunt Game. The object of the game was to find different things around the seminary using the clues provided at each stop. You needed one clue to get to the next. It was a big hit. It’s amazing what you don’t notice after seeing it everyday.

After the Hunt, was a prayer service in the Immaculate Conception Chapel. Then it was time for lunch.

Can You Say Bar-be-que?

The lunch was catered by The Italian Bros. and the food was delicious. There was a cook onsite grilling up more food than anyone could eat. There were even Filet Mignon sandwiches. Mm…tasty. Or, so I heard.

As everyone arrived, it was my job to make sure everyone got leid. And I took my job seriously. It was fun to see the expressions on the faces of my co-workers when I said "you’re guaranteed 1 good lei today." I just needed to remember not to say it to a priest.

Our fabulous baker made a delicious cake for the occasion and it was definitely a work of art.

We had a hula hoop contest won by Brenda due to her "mom skills", and a limbo contest won by the library’s very own Juan DeJesus.juan wins limbo contest

Everyone enjoyed themselves and are still talking about it. After all the shouting, headaches and disorganized meetings, the day turned out to be one to remember.

When was the last time you had this much fun at work?

What A Tangled Web We Weave…

May 9th, 2008

Or in my case, knit! This week I went on a yarn shopping trip with two fellow crochet and knitters, Monique and Ciara. After looking up local yarn shops on Ravelry, we realized there was one right in our backyard. The Tanlged Web at 7900 Germantown Ave. It’s nice little shop filled to the brim with yarn of every kind. The sales people were as friendly and helpful (even when I asked a dumb question about the yarn winder thingey).

There will be moving to a new and larger location soon which promises to have a place to chat and create inside or outside. Sounds like we’ve found a new place to hang out this summer.

After leaving there we made our way to a thrift shop I used to frequent in Norristown. I went to find off to find yarn and needles and the ladies headed for the shoes and purses. By the time they made their way to the craft section, I’d found a $3 bundle of 9 sets of needles and a few bags of yarn that looked interesting. Can you believe that? Nine sets of needles for 3 bucks. I was a happy camper.

Then it was time to hit Michaels on the way to lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. I found some yarn to break up a red blanket I’m working on (crocheting) and some chenille that was on sale. Of course, when I got to the register, it wasn’t on sale. The yarn was in the wrong bin. Fine. I put it back and we headed off the Factory.

Three lunch specials and a Coach bag later, we were on our way home with our goodies. Now we actually have to make something. Oh, and I did share my 9 pack with fellow knitter Ciara. She got 3 sets of needles out of the deal.

General Colin Powell’s Rules to Live By

January 21st, 2008

This morning I did something I don’t often have an opportunity to do. I watched the View with my mom. Well, she was watching and I was listening as I played around on the blog. This morning, in honor of Dr. martin Luther King Jr’s day, Gen. Colin Powell was a guest and the interview was pretty good. During the interview Elizabeth mentioned his list of rules to live by. I had to find the list and thought I would share it with you.

  1. It ain’t as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
  2. Get mad, then get over it.
  3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
  4. It can be done!
  5. Be careful what you choose. You may get it.
  6. Don’t let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
  7. You can’t make someone else’s choices. You shouldn’t let someone else make yours.
  8. Check small things.
  9. Share credit.
  10. Remain calm. Be kind.
  11. Have a vision.
  12. Don’t take counsel of your fears or naysayers.
  13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.

Trying on a new “dress”

January 20th, 2008

Before I completely move into my new digs, I decided to “try on” a few new skins to pretty up the place. I’ll change them periodically to see which will work before I make a more permanent look.

So, what do you think? Do you like my new dress?

Welcome

January 2nd, 2008

Welcome to my new plot of cyber-space. I know it’s not much to look at now, but I’ll work on that a little down the road. For now, I thought this would be a great way to stay connected and chronicle my journey to somewhere.

So…it’s a new year. Have you made any realistic resolutions that you REALLY plan to keep?

Happy New Year!

January 1st, 2008

Happy New Year! Happy New Beginnings! Happy New You!

The ball has dropped. The confetti has been thrown. Another year has come and gone. January 1 is the starting point to take another step toward getting it right. As the clock struck 12:01, I made the same resolution I have made the past 3 years. To make no resolutions. Just do what you know you need to do and make it count. After some thought, I decided to breakaway from my new tradition and make one goal for this new beginning. Be kinder and more patient. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a HUGE deal for me. This year I plan to work toward being a more kind and patient Clesha. Who better to start showing this to than me.

So this year, I will not beat myself up for forgetting birthdays, emails responses, not returning phone calls, not writing everyday or any other self-defeating thoughts I may have. No, this year I am going to allow myself the room to grow by trying to be perfectly imperfect. This year I filter out the background noise so I can hear God’s voice above my own. This year I truly walk in my destiny.

Here’s to that first step!
