My Best Coupon Deal So Far

by Clesha on March 12, 2009

My favorite store Target has my favorite 0-1 point soup on sale this week.  That’s right, Progresso soups are on sale for $1.40.  Because Target doesn’t specify which soups (unlike Acme), I can get my Progresso Light soups and eat them for a light lunch, dinner or snack.

This morning I made my way over to the store with my coupons and circular.  I made out my lists earlier in the week, but left it at home with 2 other circulars I was still looking through (this is where the clip things to your list idea came from).  The last time I went into Target with Progresso soup coupons, there was some sort of confusion about whether or not they would be accepted since they were printed off the computer.  They did let me use them, but I was hoping for less drama on this trip.

I got my 6 cans of soups and some other items before heading to checkout.  When the cashier rung up everything my total was $31.51.  I handed over my coupons and watched the deductions.  I will give this one tip when using coupons.  Watch the monitor to make sure the coupon is being deducted from your total.  Some times, for whatever reason, the coupons will seem to scan, and beep, but the amount does not come off your total.  If this happens, get your coupon back for use at a later time.

When the final coupon was scanned, my total dropped to $20.33.  That’s a saves of $13.05.  I managed to get the 6 cans of soup for FREE!  This is how it worked out:

  • Soup was on sale for $1.40.  I bought 6 which came to $8.40.
  • I had 5 coupons worth $1.10 each, which is $5.50 total.
  • I had 3 coupons that were buy 2 get $1 off.  That’s another $3.00.
  • Final cost = $0 for 6 cans of soup!

This is my best coupon deal so far.  I finally get how to work the coupon system and to stack my coupons (in a good way).  This same idea will work for buy 1 get 2 free, buy 4 for $5, whatever the sale may be.  If you have enough coupons to cover each individual item, it will save you more money and you may get it for free in the long run.
