{Exhale} Get Your Priorities Straight!

get your priorities straightHow have you been? Busy, I’m sure. Remember that list you wrote of all the things you do on a daily basis? Pull it out and take a look at it. What’s the first two things at the top of your list? Does it look something like this (in no particular order):

1. make dinner
2. go to cleaners
3. meet with boss
4. call mom
5. go to baseball game
6. clean the house
7. workout
8. blah blah blah

I’m willing to bet that you are no where on that list. I’ll even go a step further and say that God doesn’t appear on that list either. Yet you move through your day, most of the time on autopilot, as if the world would stop running if you didn’t get it all done…today.

You need to start putting yourself at the top of your list. Not some times, or when you have a free moment, but everyday. You give time and attention to every and all things in your universe, but you always seem to find a reason or an excuse not to do the same for yourself. Don’t you get tired of carrying the world around on your back? Don’t you believe you are worth one moment out of the 24 hours that make up your day? Don’t you think you are worthy of honoring yourself and all the tasks that you complete in your day?

I hope you answered yes to all of those questions because you are. All too often we give in to this notion that we have to do it all to be it all, in order to have it all. This is only true if having it all also includes the ulcers, stress headaches, body aches and health issues that come along with carrying the world. At some point you have to put it down and recharge.

Think about it for a second. You’re running from here to there, doing this and that, and suddenly, you wake up and can’t seem to mustard the energy to get out of bed. Look at your list again. All of those things you have put on your plate still needs to be done. Who’s going to do them now? Who’s going to make sure the world is still running now that you’re flat out on your back? No one, because you have made yourself so indispensable that nothing will get done now that you’re not well enough to do it.

When momma is happy…

It’s important to get your priorities in order, and you do that by putting yourself and God at the top of your list. Take time everyday to recharge your batteries so that you can continue to do all the things you need to do. And, FYI…there is no such thing as I don’t have time, especially when you have time to do everything
else. Put yourself on your schedule and do the things that bring you joy. It’s doesn’t always have to be something extravagant or larger than life. It just has to be meaningful to you.

Ways to bring the ahhh back to your life

Starting today, take one hour out of your day and do something for you. Here are a few suggestions if you’re having trouble getting started:

  • get up before everyone else and spend time talking to God while you enjoy a cup a of tea
  • go for a leisurely walk
  • buy yourself some flowers
  • watch a comedy
  • go out with friends
  • laugh loud & hard
  • lay quietly with a lavender eye pillow over your eyes
  • take a sacred bath
  • spend time at the perfume counter and buy yourself something new
  • read a book workout if it’s something you enjoy doing (yes, this can actually be relaxing)

There are so many ways to honor yourself with time for yourself. Make today the day you put yourself on the list and make you your top priority.
